The UW E-Business Institute (UWEBI) is a campus-wide University of Wisconsin-Madison initiative conducting multi-disciplinary research on e-business strategies, emerging information technologies and innovative business practices. The UWEBI's overarching goal: enhance the competitiveness of Wisconsin industry.

We also name annually a Distinguished Fellow, a visionary who has led significant achievement and advancement in IT and e-business. We give the award at the annual Business Best Practices and Emerging Technologies Conference.

FDA clears the first RFID-enabled solution to improve the safety and efficiency of the blood supply.

A six-year collaboration between industry and the University of Wisconsin-Madison RFID Lab achieved a major milestone this week with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearing the first RFID-enabled solution to improve the safety and efficiency of the blood supply.

Robert Ratner Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and UWEBC Executive Director Raj Veeramani and UW RFID Lab Director Alfonso Gutierrez helped develop the system as part of a $1.5 million National Institutes of Health grant.

“The iTrace for Blood Centers device has the ability to enhance blood safety by helping to ensure that unsuitable units are not released,” said Karen Midthun, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

Visionary CEO named 2013 UWEBI Distinguished Fellow
Thomas Kalinske received the 2013 UWEBI Distinguished Fellow Award October 1 at the 15th annual Business Best Practices & Emerging Technologies Conference. Kalinske also gave the plenary keynote address at the conference. The award is given to recognize visionary leadership and advancements in IT and e-business (past recipients in right column).
Kalinske's professional career has included stints as CEO of Mattel, Sega, Knowledge Universe, and LeapFrog.

Mobile asset tracking research applies RFID in healthcare industry
